    Building statistical capacity

Statistics Denmark has participated in statistical capacity building in various countries for the past 20 years. We work closely with partner institutions and tailor advice to local needs and conditions while aspiring to international standards., Why statistics are important, A country needs statistics to describe its social, economic and environmental conditions in order to improve the lives and opportunities of its citizens. Statistics thus play an important role in planning, governing and developing societies. Statistics provide the information needed for policy-makers to make evidence-based decisions, for citizens to form opinions and hold government accountable, for businesses to make sound decisions, and for researchers to analyse society., Meeting both national and international needs for statistics, The national statistical institution plays a central role in producing official statistics. The institution must be professional and independent from the political system and have the capacity to produce impartial, relevant, reliable, timely and comparable statistics of high quality. Producing statistics for national needs as well as international monitoring of among others the Sustainable Development Goals are important tasks. This requires a competent and professional national statistical institution which is competently staffed and sufficiently funded., International cooperation, Statistics Denmark has participated in statistical capacity building in various countries for the past 20 years. We work closely with partner institutions and tailor advice to local needs and conditions while aspiring to international standards. The close cooperation with our partner ensures a high degree of ownership for the projects and creates lasting results. Our goal in capacity building is to achieve sustainable change through knowledge transfer and practical advice. Our staff transfers knowledge on the topics they work with on a daily basis. This ensures discussions on an equal level and a mutual understanding between our staff and the staff in the partner institution., Our expertise, We participate in capacity building projects in all aspects of the statistical production from data collection to processing of data to dissemination of statistics to users. We work with social, economic and business statistics. We can also build capacity on issues like quality management, administrative data sources, legislation, IT infrastructure and databases, and coordination of the national statistical system. We have experience from countries in East Europe, Caucasus, the Middle East, Central Asia, South East Asia and Africa., Financing, Our involvement in building statistical capacity is either financed by international institutions like the European Union and the World Bank or by bilateral donors. Our projects are designed in close cooperation with the partner institution and the funding agency to ensure local needs are met. , Read more on building statistical capacity (pdf),

Full register extraction for public institutions

Public institutions can order full register extraction for their projects – meaning all observations in the register – if they need it. This is a result of Denmark’s Data Portal wanting to give projects enhanced capabilities for running several iterations of populations, continuously quality assuring analyses and being more exploratory in data analyses., This enables the projects to:, create populations, create controls for populations created in , Denmark’s Data Portal, create sub-populations of basic data for enrichment of external populations, In the project proposal, the population must be described shortly and precisely (without technical terms, details or data specifications), and it must be documented who creates the population. We are happy to give you advice on which registers that could be necessary to order.,  , Examples of requests for full register extraction, ’The population consists of all senior-class pupils who left school between 2010 and 2020. We want to create the population ourselves.’, ’The population consists of patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) who have received hip arthroscopic treatment. Ten matching controls are created per case. We want to create the population ourselves.’, ’The population consists of all economically active persons in Denmark. We want to create the population ourselves.’, ’The population consists of pupils in primary and lower secondary school who have participated in our user satisfaction survey on public schools in Denmark. We want to create control populations ourselves and thus want a full population.’ , ‘The population consists of all retail businesses in Region Zealand. Statistics Denmark creates the population. We want to create control populations ourselves and thus want a full population.’, ’The population consists of all general medical practitioners and the rest of the population as control population. We want to create the population ourselves.’,  , Populations for external data providers , External data providers, such as the Danish Health Data Authority, may require a delimitation of the population. For example, this applies for access to the Danish pharmaceutical products database (LMDB). In these cases, you can still create the population yourselves, which Statistics Denmark will then forward to the Danish Health Data Authority or use for data extraction., If , Denmark’s Data Portal,  creates the population , If you do not have the resources to create populations or control populations, , Denmark’s Data Portal,  can carry out this type of assignment. This is done on the basis of a framework agreement., Read more about this process under Population description, Note: The facilitated access to full register extraction is a pilot project running throughout 2025.,

    Counties and municipalities, v3:2006

Name: , AMT_KOM_V3_2006 , Description: , Before 1970, Denmark was divided into approx. 1300 parish municipalities, 86 market town municipalities and 25 counties. The Danish Municipal Reform in 1970 resulted by law in a new local and regional structure for the whole country with two administrative levels - municipalities and counties - and thereby a change of administrative units., With the Danish Municipal Reform in 1970, the number of counties was reduced to 14 and municipalities to 277. Copenhagen Municipality (code 101) and Frederiksberg Municipality (code 147) were the only ones assigned both county and municipal tasks. After the amalgamation of the Bornholm municipalities in 2003, Bornholm's Regional Municipality (code 400) held the same special status as Copenhagen and Frederiksberg., From 1 April 1974, Sengeløse Municipality was incorporated into Høje-Taastrup Municipality (code 169) and Store Magleby Municipality was incorporated into Dragør Municipality (code 155), which reduced the total number of municipalities to 275., From 1 January 2003, Bornholm's Regional Municipality (code 400) was established by merging Allinge-Gudhjem (code 401), Hasle (code 403), Nexø (code 405), Rønne (code 407) and Aakirkeby (code 409) Municipalities and Bornholm County. The merger reduced the total number of municipalities in Denmark to 271., From 1 January 2006, Ærø Municipality (code 492) was be established by merging Marstal Municipality (code 443) and Ærøskøbing Municipality (code 493), which reduced the total number of municipalities in Denmark to 270., This classification includes Christiansø (code 411). Christiansø is not part of a municipality. Instead it is administered directly by the state through the Danish Ministry of Defence., The geographical breakdown of counties and municipalities is consistent with the Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics (, NUTS, )., Valid from: , January 1, 1970 , Valid to: , December 31, 2006 , Office: , Methodology and Analysis , Contact: , Rohan James Draper, , rjd@dst.dk, , ph. +45 21 33 89 Statistics based on distances or neighbourhoods

Define your own statistical areas, In addition to statistics on administrative units such as regions and municipalities, smaller units such as postcode districts, parishes or school districts, you can also get data for analyses of geographical areas that you define yourself., Statistics on an area within a certain range from a point, A typical example of such an area is an area whithiin a certain range from a point on the map. The "point" can be a shop, a hotel, a railway station or a public institution and the periphery you define as a distance, for example, in kilometres from this point., You can define the distance in three ways: , as the crow flies, along established roads, as driving time by car along established roads., Specify the statistical data you want, Once you have defined the geographical area, you can add the statistical data you want. For example, it can be as simple as the number of people in the area in a certain age group, or the number of households with children under the age of six., Find inspiration to define your geographical area, You can also define a geographical area based on other criteria, such as areas bounded by physical barriers and lines. These can be areas of the cities or the open land you demarcate by using city limits, field boundaries, edges of forests, bridges, railroads, dams, highways, roads, streets, streams, lakes and coastlines - in short, everything you perceive as a transition from one area to another., You can also deifne an area on geometric shapes, such as circles, triangles, squares, and many-sided polygons where you define the centre or the corners by geographical coordinates, buildings, addresses or the like., There are many ways to delimit an area – the only limit is your imagination! The only requirement is that the size of an area must comply with the rules of discretion, ie. we cannot disclose statistics that make it possible to identify any individual or any individual company., Prices, The price depends on both the number of areas and the variables for which you want statistical data.
